“Admonish“ from Latin “ad” (to) + “moneo/monere” (urge, warn, remind).
Giving guidance or direction
1.What admonishment is:
“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things, grow up into him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Ephesians 4:15
3 types of people when it comes to sharing truth in love (John Maxwell)
- First you have the hiders. The hiders are the ones that don’t share the truth.
- Then you have the hurlers. They…they share the truth, but not in love.
- And then there are the healers, and they share the truth in love.
”Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:12-15
“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach, and admonish one another with all
wisdom.” Colossians 3:16
“The Lord disciplines those he loves.” Proverbs 3:12
2. How do we admonish?
Acts 18:24-25 “Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of
John.”
Acts 18:26 “He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.”
How to receive admonishment?
“A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.” Proverbs 15:1
