Enormous Words: Empowerment

Impact Christian Church https://www.impactfranklin.com

“You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if
the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of
Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is
dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.”

Romans 8:9-13

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who
raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his
Spirit, who lives in you. Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation—but it is
not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful
nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you
will live…”

Romans 8:11

Who is the Spirit?

II. Why do I need the Spirit?

  • “So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.” Romans 7:21-23
  • “Therefore brothers we have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature to live according to it.” Romans 8:12

III. Do I have the Spirit living in me?

  • Acts 2:38: “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”
  • Your interior becomes His address.
  • Here’s the difference: the Spirit of God dwells in the Christian.
  • (Oikem) comes from the word “house” (oikos) implication is that the Spirit of God has taken up residence inside our house (us).
  • Ephesians 5:18 “Don’t get drunk with wine…Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”

IV. How do I live in the Spirit?

  • “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.” Romans 8 -11.
  • “…those who are led by the Spirit are sons of God” Romans 8:14
  • “All of this I’ve spoken while I’m still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” John 14:25-26
  • “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:22-25
